How Long Does a Same-Day Crown Take?

Same-day crowns have been praised for many reasons, including durability, fast results, and natural appearance. But the question you might be asking yourself is, how long does a same-day crown take? In this blog, dental experts from Insight Dental Group will answer that and provide more insights about same-day crowns.

What Is A Same-Day Crown

Essentially, a same-day crown is a dental restoration treatment in which a new crown is fabricated and placed on a tooth in a single appointment. This procedure is possible because it uses Computer-Aided Design/Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology.

What Is The Difference Between Same-Day And Traditional Crowns?

The biggest difference between same-day and traditional crowns lies in the type of technology they use. Same-day crowns are made with CAD/CAM technology, which allows the dentist to fabricate and place the crown in one appointment.

On the other hand, traditional crowns require multiple visits to the dentist. They are made with impressions taken of your teeth and sent to the dental lab where the crown is created. Once ready,  the crown is sent back to the dentist's office and placed in a separate appointment.

Steps For Preparing A Dental Crown

The dental crown preparation process is completed in four simple steps:

  • Assessment

Step one involves an assessment where your dentist will conduct a thorough oral exam to check the condition of your teeth and gums. This will help determine if a crown is viable for you and if you need additional dental work.

  • Preparation

If you’re a good candidate for a crown, your dentist will prepare the tooth for the crown by removing decay and unwanted material. They will also shape the surface of the tooth.

  • Creation

After tooth preparation, the dentist will take a digital impression of your tooth and create a 3D image. This image is then sent to a milling machine, which fabricates the custom crown. It only takes about 60 to 90 minutes to create a CEREC same-day crown, which is then bonded to your teeth during the same appointment.

  • Placement

The final step involves attaching your new crown to the affected tooth. Your dentist will fit and adjust the crown to ensure it fits snugly. They will then give your crown a final polish and cement it to secure it in place.

How Long Does The Same-Day Crown Appointment Last?
