Dental anxiety is real, and you’re not alone. Plenty of patients feel nervous about getting the care they need. That’s why we offer a variety of sedation options to keep your experience soothing, painless, and stress-free.
While maintaining good oral health is of the utmost importance to us at Insight Dental Group in Houston, we understand that our patients can’t do that if they live in fear of going to the dentist. Dental anxiety is an intense fear or feeling of distress when going to the dentist.
When taken to its extremes, it can even develop into a phobia, where patients are so afraid of the dentist that they avoid dental care altogether. We want our patients to get the dental care they need without experiencing trauma.
That’s why we offer dental sedation to all of our patients for any appointment, no matter how routine it is. Sedation relaxes patients, eases their stress and anxiety, and increases their comfort during any dental appointment.
Not only does it improve a patient’s mental state, but it can also help to reduce restlessness, suppress sensitive gag reflexes, reduce pain sensation, and increase patient cooperation. Contact us at Insight Dental Group to schedule a sedation consultation today.
When patients are sedated, the dentist can get more dental work done with fewer appointments which means less overall time spent in the dental chair.

I had a root canal this morning. Mine was a particularly difficult case as I had very long roots, calcification and an infection. Dr. Shen did a great job and carefully explained everything. The front office was very friendly and efficient.
If you would like to be sedated for a dental appointment, you should let us know ahead of time so our dentists can see you for a consultation. They will speak to you about the sedation we offer, what its effects are, how it’s administered, and how you can expect it to affect you.
During your consultation, we will need to review your medical history which is the most important factor in determining your eligibility for sedation. We need to know if you have any medical conditions, take any medications, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. For nitrous oxide, you must be able to breathe fully out of your nose.
You will be informed not to eat for 2 hours before your appointment to reduce your risk of nausea and vomiting.
Once you get to the office, we will administer laughing gas by placing the nasal mask over your nose and flowing oxygen and nitrous oxide through it into your nose. You simply have to inhale and you will be sedated within a few minutes.
While you are under sedation, we can complete whatever treatment you have come in for. Sedation is often associated with more invasive treatments but patients can be sedated for routine checkups and cleanings as well.
After we have completed your treatment, we will remove the gas mask and within a few minutes, the gas will leave your body and you will be free to leave and return to your normal activities.
Sedation is very safe because it is administered by a professional and qualified dentist who is trained in the administration of sedation and knows how to monitor patients throughout the treatment to make sure nothing goes wrong.
However, whenever we are administering medication, there is some level of risk involved. This risk will be clearly explained to you, but it is very low and nitrous oxide is the mildest and safest sedative that you can get so you have no reason to worry.
This is why we carefully review your medical history to make sure you are healthy and that sedation is suitable for you. If you have any concerns about the safety of sedation, you can contact us at (713) 623-0700.
